The likeliest culprits most people will point to are the Best Picture nominees themselves. Ever since expanding their top category to include a maximum of 10 films back in 2009, the Academy has done a solid job at ensuring that commercially successful works are recognized. Over the past couple of years, big box office hits like Avatar , Inception , Django Unchained , and Gravity were putting together Oscar campaigns in addition to drawing in large cro
The Academy Awards telecast, seen by most as Hollywood’s biggest night, has been enjoying slight upticks in the ratings over the past couple of years. Whether that is due to the producers’ choices of popular hosts (Seth MacFarlane and Ellen DeGeneres) or the nominated films posting very healthy box office numbers is up for debate. What matters to the Academy is that people were tuning in to their s
So you’ve heard all the talk, accusations and screaming about the film Hounddog (or as many spelling-impaired people are writing it: Houndog ) screening at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival starring Dakota Fanning but haven’t seen the film. The big question on people’s mind is «Just how outrageous or explicit was that rape sce
This might be playing it safe given Davis’ win earlier this year, but there’s no reason to think she won’t have a shiny Golden Globe to set alongside (or behind) the Emmy after Sunday night. But Davis is the logical (maybe too logical) choice here; her performance on HTGAWM is always strong and manages to legitimize the series in ways it might struggle with if it didn’t have
Some interesting notes: True Grit didn’t get a single award despite ten (10!) nominations; Christopher Nolan didn’t receive any awards despite Inception being entirely original and praised for its design, winning 4 other awards no less; Anne Hathaway, poking fun at the Academy’s attempt at appealing to a younger demographic is the presentation’s youngest host ever at 28 and last but not least, 8-time Oscars host Billy Crystal made a friendly and fun appearance making some wish he was back to host ag
I really believe that director Deborah Kampmeier was earnestly trying to bring attention to the subject of sexual abuse of children, but I don’t think showing a 12 year old girl acting seductively and peppering the Film festival Games rankings|https://moviefestivalhub.com/ with scenes of her in her underwear was the way to go about
Is the director saying Lewellan was inadvertantly asking for it through her behavior? I doubt that. Is she saying Lewellen should be allowed to act seductively without fear of being attacked? I don’t know. My answer is obviously that there can be no justification for taking advantage of a child, but that she should be told that certain ways of acting are inappropriate and there are people out there who will respond to that behavior without giving thought to what is right and what is wr
Again, this one is a tough call, but Bloom is so good in her performance in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that it’s harder to argue against her than anyone else. Like so many shows, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is far better than its title suggests and it owes so much of its success to Bloom’s effervescent, musical portrayal of Rebecca Bunch that you just want her (and by extension, the series) to get a big win h
Deadline is reporting that viewership for the awards ceremony was down by 17 percent in the coveted 18-49 demographic, and 18 percent overall when compared to last year. That’s the lowest they’ve been since 2009 — a huge reason for concern considering that last year’s telecast was the most-watched since 2000. Whatever the reason may be, the Oscars couldn’t keep the interest of viewers this time aro
Hounddog suffers from something I’ve noticed in some other indie films: It’s boring and it’s too long. Although it’s filled with gorgeous scenery, the film just seems to go on and on and on. This was yet another hour and a half long movie that felt twice as long. The best thing about the film is Dakota Fanning’s performance. She really is amazing at the range and subtlety of emotion she can convey at such a young age. I only hope that she is one of the very few child actors who survives the transition to adulthood unscat
It remains to be seen if this is something that will plague the Oscars for the next handful of years or is merely a blip on the radar. Looking ahead to 2015’s award season (I know, bear with me…), there are offerings from filmmakers including Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and David O. Russell among others that could prove to be more lucrative endeavors than the crop we just got. The Academy will spend the next 12 months figuring out how to retool their telecast, but the odds of a ratings boost are in their fa
Whether you feel Mad Max: Fury Road is vastly overrated or worthy of the praise that it has received during the awards season thus far, there’s no denying that the film manages to impress simply from a directorial perspective. George Miller spent years fine-tuning the movie’s action-driven plot and visual design; as a result, Fury Road feels surprisingly intimate for a movie that was made on a nine-figure budget and features nearly as many car crashes/explosions as it does lines of dialogue. That’s quite the accomplishment, on its
